When it comes to designing an inground swimming pool, most people don't think about the interior finishing yet it's a most important part as the color of the interior will determine the color of your pool water. Can you imagine that the sky blue swimming pools you see everywhere are actually finished with WHITE plaster interior? It might be a surprise to you because the blue sky color actually isn't from the color of the interior so much as it's reflective from the blue skies above us.
In Southern California pool builders of inground swimming pools are usually plastered using a spray and hand troweled technique to apply trinity white marbelite pool plastering and that white plaster gives the new swimming pool that beautiful sky blue color which gets reflected from the sky. White plaster is also most common throughout the US and is a standard finish for swimming pools worldwide.
For other shades of blue, colored pool plastering is used and most swimming pool builders offer the plaster finish to be white, blue or shades of gray. You might think that gray plaster doesn't sound good but it's the one that gives you that deeper blue color to the swimming pool water. Most swimming pool builders offer colored plaster and shades of gray that can create deep blue coloration to the water. It happens because of the darker interior color to the pool plastering. Gray plaster is very beautiful but in certain areas it might be too hot because colored plaster can raise the pool temperature almost 10 degrees. Also, too much sun (like in Las Vegas) the gray plaster can fade and after a few years it won't be so gray. Still, they look really good, just be sure the swimming pool isn't too small if you're opting for colored pool plastering because it WILL be warmer. Warm swimming pool water is nice but if it's too warm it's NOT nice.....except of course for the spa where you want that warm water.
Swimming pool builders also offer other finishes which are alternatives to traditional swimming pool plastering. One such interior pool finish offered by swimming pool builders is 3M. This is a plaster based finish which has 3m color crystals mixed in with the plastering. 3m takes a white or colored swimming pool plaster then adds the color crystals. This creates a different look and on a bright and sunny day these color crystals will dazzle in the sun giving many different colors to the swimming pool.
Swimming pool builders also offer an interior pool finish called pebble tec which uses a colored base with actual pebbles mixed in. This is a premium swimming pool interior and is much desired by many people, especially for tropical looking pools and spas because of the pebbles. If you desire to have your swimming pool interior finished with pebble tec you can expect to pay more as it is the most expensive of swimming pool interior finishes.
In recent years, pebble technology has advanced and now there are different kinds of pebble finishes too. You can choose the standard pebble finish or pebble sheen which uses smaller pebbles. The pebble tec standard finish is fine for most people but the pebble sheen is extra nice as the pebbles are much smoother.
Some swimming pool builders offer other interior finishes but these are by far the most common. All of the interior finishes here can be used for re-finishing or re-plastering an existing pool or for brand new swimming pools. For pricing information on these plaster upgrades, ask your local swimming pool builder.
If you're looking to get a brand new swimming pool built, don't worry about getting the upgrades, there's nothing wrong with the white pool plastering. There are many swimming pool options which may be of interest to you and usually finances have a part in the decision process of what to use for your swimming pool interior. Talk to your swimming pool builder and determine the swimming pool price with regular white plaster and everything else you want on it. After that, if you want to invest a little more then upgrade to the colored plaster or the upgraded interior finishes of 3m or pebble tec.

(PS.....one of the most unique swimming pools was finished with RED tile....completely tiled interior and the water of the pool was fire engine red. Wish I had a photo to post, it was an incredible look, red water pool.)
